Melissa Spooner

Triathlon Coach, Nutritionist and Yoga Studio Owner

This podcast is part of the ongoing series for the local Vernon BC area.
In this episode, I speak with and learn about one of the fantastic world class athletes that we have in the valley, Mel Spooner.
I was fortunate enough to have Mel as my coach during my Ironman journey 2016.
This is from her site:

Melissa Spooner B.Sc. Nutriton & Studio Co-ordinator

Mel loves working with people to determine how to implement a healthy lifestyle individually! Whether it is nutrition, a training program for an event or a yoga pose everyone will have their own way of expressing it and feeling it. Understanding that people’s needs are individually based is the foundation of how Mel works. Sure there are general guidelines but how do those work with each person’s own life? Whether dealing with food sensitivities, weight loss, event goals or how to do a headstand effortlessly– Mel understands that we are all unique. She enjoys being a part of a great team that works together to help educate people to get the most out of life!

After years of being a world class Ironman athlete and winning 3 IM titles Mel retired from racing in 2005 and moved to Vernon with her husband Chris Spooner in 2006. She has a local Triathlon club called Endurance Health and Fitness and just this year, with her friend Laura Medcalf started a Kids Triathlon Team called the TRI MONSTERS!. She loves being part of this community and seeing what lies around the next corner – whether that corner is on a run, a bike or life!

Mel recently completed her 200 RYT training with SOYA in Penticton and is keen to share her new found knowledge of breath and movement.

“A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality” (John Lennon)

We start off with her history, and a little about how she began her studies, and athletic career, as well as the process of "falling into" the triathlon community. Mel goes over some of the reasons that she loves the sport of triathlon, as well as her love of life, and of helping others. Her vibrance can be heard in her natural and authentic responses, and I am very grateful for my time with her! Please enjoy the talk that we shared, and I was aiming for about 30 minutes, but it went a little over that time!
