This weeks episode is chat that I had with Brad Swanson. Brad started school called Kala Star school in 2013.
It is a unique school that Brad has founded, and it is right here in our Community. Brad beleives that kids should learn directly from the experts in a certain area, so he gets the experts to teach the kids about what they are doing. An example is a Biologist that is researching the salmon that are entering into our district through Kal Lake and then up to their spawning beds in Coldstream Creek. Brad had this expert teach the class the life cycle of the salmon, as well as the importance of the viability of the lake and the ecosystem that surrounds it, including the spawning area being food for the bears, and the detritus that is generated every year from the spawning.
Brad also beleives in teaching his students the importance of interacting with others, and being courteous. On the day that I visited them, they had a local woman (who is 92) come for lunch, and then tell some stories from her experiences from bygone years. It is a fantastic way to keep the generations of knowledge transferred down to our latest generation. The school also has an interaction with the Coldstream Meadows retirement fascility, where they compete in a cribbage tournament with the members there!
I really enjoyed my time setting up, and chatting with Brad and the students at his school, as well as trying to keep up with some of them after the interview was complete. For more information about what Brad is doing for our community, check out the links here:
