Do you ever wonder what it takes to find your site on the web?
A little analysis is always important to figure out where it is to focus your efforts.
That is why google Analytics is such a fantastic tool to have for your site. If you don' have analytics set up for your site today, stop reading this post and go get it NOW! Seriously, stop reading this and get Google analytics for your site right now: Google Analytics. I will also put together a quick tutorial on how to get this done quickly for wordpress if you would like, so please let me know by comments below.
Once you have your analytics up and running you can start tto see what keywords people are using to find your site, and often times, it is not what you may have expected. Often times, it is for an obscure article that you added to your site as an extra bit of information that people are landing onto your site, and then hopefully sticking around to find out more.
So how can you do the research to figure out what people are searching for that is relevant to what you are selling online? There is a free tool, as long as you sign up for google adwords, called the Keyword Planner. Within this powerful tool are years of data on any key-phrase that you can imagine. The best thing is that you can do a key-phrase analysis of what you believe your customers are searching for, and then see the relative amount of people that are searching for those keywords each month. You can find out how competitive those keywords are (how many people are paying google to use them in their adwords campaigns RIGHT NOW) and you can even see how much those keywords are demanding for page one ranking!
So how do you do it?
Step 1. get yourself a free adwords account: ADWORDS
Step 2. go to the tab at the top called "Tools"
Step 3. Select "Keyword Planner"
Step 4 through infinity. Add your keywords and see if they are being searched for.
Once you have played with the keyword planner a bit, you may want to figure out what the best way to analyze the data that you are seeing here so that it is relative to you.
What I like to do is to download each of the keyword sets from my clients list of "top ten" keywords that they think people are searching for in their category. I will then put ALL of those keywords onto a master spreadsheet, and sort them according to total searches, and I will color code the top 50(or wherever the diminishing return value for the set is) all green. (because green is for go) Going to the bottom of this list I will colour the ones that have 10 searches a month or less I will colour these red---as there is not enough data to consider these keywords at all (and sometimes this is where the suggested keywords from your client (you) fall)
I will then sort for competition, and colour the highest competed upon words yellow.
I will then sort for searches again and only look at the top 50 that are green here alone. If there are some that I deem irrelevant I will call these "negative keywords" and colour these grey.
Now I have a very colourful spreadsheet, but the content is invaluable for my next set of blog posts!
I hope that helps you
