This year has been a focus of celebrating my 50th birthday in new and exciting ways. One of them was a surprise birthday, where some of my friends and family flew from around the country to visit me and celebrate at a local ski area with me and my family! It was so much fun, and I fell very fortunate to have such a wonderful wife and friends that would work together in that way to be with me on my special day!

I also decided to mark the year by training for my first Ironman™ triathlon in Whistler BC Canada. I began training in the new year, and here I go over some of the lessons that I learned during the process.

  1. Find a Mentor/Coach
This is key both in life and in an endeavour that you are focused on, as it helps to figure out many of the things that you do not know, and don't want to have to figure out on your own. This saves time, as "success leaves clues", and if you model yourself after someone that has already been successful in the area that you are trying to grow in, you can get results faster!
  2. Planning vs Reacting
I use Sundays to plan the rest of my week, and it includes all of my activities from work, family, volunteering, to all of my training times for the week. I found that what does not get planned does not get done.
  3. Be resilient
There are times that you will need to be flexible to what your plan is, and be in a state of flow, in the event that something that is beyond your control comes into your life. In my case it was a bout of walking pneumonia, which caused me to be unable to train at all for a 7 week period. This was not a fun time, as I was worried about my plans, but I let my Coach know, and she helped me to not worry about it, by giving me the plan and the process to be sure that I was healthy before training again.
  4. Live to Learn
Since this was brand new for me, it really helped me to learn so many things about training my body, and learning what my body needs for fuelling.
  5. Celebrate the day/wins!
I celebrated the whole day during the Ironman, and I do now celebrate even small wins during some training rides, or during my work day. The act of celebrating and being grateful really translates well to all aspects of life, and makes the quality of your life much better
  6. Lather Rinse Repeat--Setup Execute repeat
The idea of doing this again after learning all of these lessons is something that I know I can do, and I know that it can be better than the first time, because I have learned so much along my journey.

These lessons really do apply to all of the many aspects of my life, and not just my athletic side, so I am truly grateful for the process and the ability to be able to do this in the first place!
