DO NOT buy the Warranty replacement until you read this:

Recently my MagicJack line failed to work, and I have had some bad luck with the folks at customer service on more than one occasion. I found that my Magic Jack had simply stopped working, and I thought that the hardware simply needed to be updated. I ended up going through all of the information online at the MagicJack Site, and nothing was working for me. I ended up calling them, after spending a gruelling 35 minutes on the Chat line. I then spoke to someone there who had a script, and also assumed that I was unaware of what my product was doing, so I let them guide me through their processes ( I am learning about patience through my calls to customer care representatives). After approximately 45 minutes of jumping through their hoops, they asked me to plug the unit into the computer, at which time I told the person that I had done that already. I did it again, and it did not work (SURPRISE!) but we then learned that there was no support for my version of OSX that I am running! Wow that was a crazy realization.

They then told me that I had to get a "Warranty replacement" for $16.51 plus shipping? I argued, but finally succumbed and said please ship it ASAP. The product arrived within a week, and I plugged it in according to their 1 2 3 4 steps, and this one did not work either! Guess what I had to do AGAIN? Call and speak to someone else for another half an hour. we finally got the old product and the new one working, but it was not logical, or orthodox the manner in which it happended. This all happened back in November of 2015 and since then there has been a new download to get for OSX 10.11.2 users: http://upgrades.magicjack.com/mjupdate.dmg I wish that I had this before wasting my time on the phone, but alas it was not meant to be. Fortunately when tragedy struck again in early January and the Magic Jack simply stopped working, I had a great resource in this post here to show me the way to fix this: http://www.chiriquichatter.net/blog/2015/12/11/magic-jack-problem-fixed-on-el-capitan/comment-page-1/

Please note that the manner that it worked for me was this:

  1. Download the dmg Update from MagicJack
  2. Restart the computer
  3. Plug in the Magicjack to the USB on the back of the computer (not in a hub)
  4. wait 10 seconds for the computer to recognize it
  5. When it doesn't recognize the drive say "crap I will have to unplug it and try it again"
  6. Unplug the MagicJack and replug it into the back of the computer
  7. Wait ten seconds
  8. If the computer recognizes the MagicJack  (and a keyboard setup assistant pops up) then continue to step 9 otherwise repeat 5-7 until it does.
  9. Run the mjupdate from your downloads FIRST (note that you may have to decrease your settings to allow software to run on this computer from unknown sources--or select run anyway in the System Preferences-->Security & Privacy-->General--> "Allow apps downloaded from")
  10. Run the MagicJack software on the MagicJack window that popped up in step 8 (the update will be added)
  11. Test your phone
  12. Sing a song.

Thank you to the post from chiriquichatter.net for helping to guide the way for me to get this working again!

Here is the ReadMe file that came with the update:

magicJack Update Instructions

This update fixes magicJack device compatibility with MacOS X 10.11 "El Capitan".
It is recommended for all magicJack devices with an Ethernet port regardless of the MacOS X version they are used with.

Step 1. Plug your magicJack device into the Mac's USB port. Wait for up to 10 seconds for a drive window with the magicJack icon to appear.
If the drive window appears, please skip to Step 2.
On MacOS X 10.11 ("El Capitan") the drive window may not appear. In this case, please follow these steps:
1.1 Unplug magicJack device from the Mac's USB port.
1.2 Restart your Mac. Please do not skip this step. It is very important to restart your Mac before going further.
1.3 Plug your magicJack device into your Mac's USB port. Wait for up to 10 seconds for the drive window with the magicJack icon to appear.
If the drive window appears, proceed to Step 2.
1.4 Unplug your magicJack device from the Mac's USB port.
1.5 Wait a couple of seconds.
1.6 Repeat steps 1.3-1.5 until the drive window with the magicJack icon appears. (Note: This could take 20-25 attempts before the icon appears)

Step 2. Double-click "mjupdate" icon from the Finder window, from which you have opened this instructions document.
The “mjupdate” tool will start in a Terminal window and display the following text:
"Detected a magicJack device. Opening..."
"magicJack Device connected"
"PLEASE DO NOT UNPLUG! Updating, please wait..."
Let the tool do its job. Wait for up to a minute until you see the following text in the Terminal window:
"magicJack device has been successfully updated. Please replug before use."
You may close the Terminal window after the above text is displayed in the Terminal window.

Step 3. Unplug your magicJack device from the Mac's USB port, wait for a couple of seconds, and plug it back in. A drive window with the magicJack icon will appear in several seconds.

Step 4. Double-click the "magicJackSetup" icon. The updated version of the magicJack application will be installed to your Mac, and then launched. If you receive the message: “magicJackSetup” is damaged and can’t be opened.”, go to “System Preferences” -> “Security & Privacy” and click the “General” tab. Click the lock image at the bottom of the window to enable changes. Under “Allow apps downloaded from”, click the radio button beside “Anywhere”. Now go back and double click the “magicJackSetup” icon. Once the app is launched you can change your security setting back to “Mac App Store and identified developers”.

This concludes the magicJack update instructions.
